Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) announces the retirement of Patricia Byers, a highly respected Speech/Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology Lead, after an impressive 23-year career with the district. Byers, who joined ABSS in 2001, has been a driving force behind the development and implementation of the Assistive Technology (AT) Program, which has benefited countless students across the district.

Byers, a graduate of Penn State University with a Masters Degree in speech and language pathology, brought a wealth of experience from her previous work in a medical setting to her role at ABSS. In 2002, she developed the AT Program, which has since been successfully implemented in all schools district-wide, making her one of the most sought-after AT specialists in the state.

Throughout her tenure, Byers has been actively involved in various professional organizations, including the North Carolina Augmentative Communication Association (NCACA), where she served as a member and Co-Chair for the NCACA Newsletter. Additionally, she has been a Consultant to the DPI AAC/AT Interdisciplinary Assessment Team Initiative, contributing to the statewide development of AT teams.

In April 2018, The New Voices Foundation recognized Byers' tireless advocacy for children with communication and physical challenges by honoring her with the Lara Jane Parker Award for Advocacy. This prestigious award acknowledges individuals who promote inclusion, communication, and literacy development through their actions and support of children with significant challenges.

As Byers embarks on her well-deserved retirement, she leaves behind a legacy of expert knowledge, unwavering passion, and dedication to improving the lives of others through facilitating communication and the use of assistive technology. Her impact on staff and students alike has been immeasurable, and her presence will be dearly missed by the entire ABSS community.

In her retirement, Byers plans to continue her work in the private sector, educating and providing needed technology to others, while also cherishing time with her grandchildren and caring for her mother.

The Alamance-Burlington School System extends its sincere gratitude to Patricia Byers for her 23 years of impeccable service and leadership. Her contributions will continue to inspire and impact the lives of many for years to come.
