The Alamance-Burlington School System has received state accountability results after a presentation at the North Carolina State Board of Education meeting today. Reports include test results and school performance growth during the 2023-2024 school year. Based on analysis of end of grade (EOG) and end of course (EOC) tests, ABSS saw improvement and growth from the previous 2022-2023 school year.
In addition to gains in test results, four schools in the district moved from a Grade F to Grade D and four schools previously listed as low-performing schools have been removed from the list. However, two more schools were added as additional low-performing schools, bringing the district total to 15 schools.
Grove Park Elementary was one of the schools removed from the low-performing list. Principal Traci Horton emphasized, “After determining their schoolwide yearly goals, Grove Park intentionally analyzed student data and planned purposeful instruction based on student needs. Teachers and staff were then supported to provide instruction that focused not only on proficiency but also on student growth.”
Academic growth is an indication of the progress that students in the schools are making. Each school’s status is reported as Exceeded Expectations, Met Expectations, and Did Not Meet Expectations. School Performance Grades are based on proficiency composite (80%) and academic growth (20%). A low performing school is identified as a school performance grade of F or D and a growth status of Meeting Expectations or Did Not Meet Expectations.
2023-2024 Academic Year overall results:
8 Schools identified as Exceeded Expectations for overall growth
18 Schools identified as Met Expectations for overall growth
10 Schools identified as Did Not Meet Expectations for overall growth
Interim Superintendent, Bill Harrison, expressed enthusiasm about the results, stating, “We are incredibly proud of the strides our schools have made. This progress is the direct result of the tireless work of our educators, the support from our community, and the resilience of our students. However, while we celebrate these achievements, we recognize that our journey is ongoing. We must continue to build on this momentum, striving for continuous improvement and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
During the 2023-2024 year, the ABSS Curriculum Department focused on the rollout and implementation of a new Reveal Math curriculum, strategic professional development opportunities for educators, funding two tutors in every Elementary School, and providing specialized time for educators to review student data throughout the year to provide interventions and student specific differentiated learning plans.
Chief Academic Officer, Revonda Johnson shared, “There is a lot to be proud of. Our focus on academic excellence and the dedication of our principals, teachers, and central services are clearly reflected in our outcomes. While the results are exciting, they are a benchmark and there is still work to be done. We remain committed to maintaining our focus on teaching and learning.”
The 2023-2024 results reflect a year of focused effort and commitment to enhancing educational outcomes for all students across the district. Alamance-Burlington Schools is committed to leveraging these results to further enhance our educational strategies and continue fostering an environment where all students can thrive.
