On October 8th, the Alamance-Burlington School System Board of Education convened for a work session.

Board of Education Business
Board members discussed the North Carolina School Board Association 2024 Voting Delegates. The NCSBA’s annual conference is an opportunity where school boards can participate in the advocacy and direction of the NCSBA’s future. Each school board may send up to four primary voting delegates. Chuck Marsh, Seneca Rogers, Dan Ingle, and Donna Westbrooks expressed interest. The board will vote at an upcoming meeting.


Superintendent/Finance/Human Resources
Dr. Fleming reviewed progress on his 90-day entry plan with the BOE.

  3. Resources and Stewardship – Ensuring that our resources, personnel, financial, and operational, are managed effectively and support our mission.

Curriculum
Ms. Johnson presented a contract for EDIA, a personalized AI Math platform that provides students with practice, reads their work, and provides personalized feedback based on their mistakes. Content is aligned with the NC Standards. Teachers will use real-time data from classroom assignments to form small groups and differentiate instruction. ABSS will use Federal dollars ($130,000.00) to provide this platform for grades 7-12 students to utilize during their small groups and intervention time. There will be professional development/training for teachers during an upcoming teacher workday. The contract was approved unanimously.

Two informational items were shared and will be placed on the consent agenda at the October Board Meeting.

  • AO Elementary School is seeking approval to take their 5th graders to Washington, DC. The trip is planned for April 10-11, 2025. 

  • The Western Alamance High School Dance Team is seeking permission to attend the National Dance Alliance Nationals competition from February 12-17, 2025 in Orlando, Florida. 

Ms. Johnson gave a shout out to all ABSS Coaches during National Coach Appreciation Week. Did you know we have 486 coaches in the district with 3,145 combined years of experience across all sports and levels? Thank you, Coaches! There was also a reminder that ABSS Family University is coming up next Monday,  October 14. This event provides opportunities for families to learn about supporting their students throughout their educational journey. 

Student Services
Dr. Davis presented a policy revision to Policy 1510/4200/7270 School Safety. This policy was presented for review for first reading and will be on the agenda at the next meeting.

Operations
Mr. Hook presented an amendment to the existing HVAC design-build contract to provide for the construction portion of the contract at nine school sites.

The value of the amendment is $8,534,867. The total value of the design-build contract is $8,890,000. The amendment to the existing contract was approved unanimously.

Human Resources
Ms. Anderson presented the personnel report for approval. The report was approved unanimously.
